Scope and pricing
Make sure every quote scopes the same work per opening. That's the only way to compare bids.
- Is this an insert or a full-frame replacement, per opening?
- Is exterior aluminum capping or trim wrap included?
- Is interior trim repair or replacement included?
- What happens, and what does it cost, if rot is found in the sill?
- Is haul-away and disposal of the old units included?
- What's NOT included that often becomes a change order later?
Product and glass specs
"Energy efficient" is marketing. The NFRC numbers are the product.
- What are the U-factor and SHGC for the exact units quoted?
- Are the frame corners fusion-welded or mechanically fastened?
- Double or triple pane, and what gas fill and spacer type?
- Is the model ENERGY STAR qualified for the Northern zone?
- Are grids between the panes or applied to the surface?
Warranty and workmanship
Glass, frame, and labor warranties are three different things. All three matter.
- How long is the installation labor warranty, and is it transferable?
- What's the glass seal-failure warranty, and does it cover labor to swap the unit?
- If a sash won't lock in year 3, who do I call?
- Is the company lead-safe certified for pre-1978 homes?
Crew, schedule, and financing
Lead times on custom-ordered windows are long. Monthly payment is a marketing number.
- Are installers W-2 employees or subcontractors?
- How many weeks from order to installation day?
- How many openings per day, and will the house be open to weather?
- What's the APR and total interest, not just the monthly payment?

Frequently asked questions
Is it rude to ask for the APR in writing?+
No. Reputable companies expect it. If a company refuses to put financing terms in writing, that's the answer.
Should I be worried about a same-day discount?+
A price that expires when the salesperson leaves your kitchen is a pressure tactic, not a discount. A real quote is good for at least a couple of weeks.
