Build a per-opening comparison sheet

List every opening down the left: kitchen, dining, primary bedroom, and so on. Across the top, put insert or full-frame, frame material, glass package with U-factor, grid pattern, exterior capping, interior trim, and price. Put each company in its own block. If a company didn't specify something, write "not stated." That's the row you need to ask about.

Watch for these common gaps

These are the items most commonly missing from a low bid.

  • Full-frame quoted by one company, insert by another, same total openings
  • Exterior aluminum capping or trim wrap left out
  • Rot and sill repair handled as an unpriced change order
  • Interior trim, drywall return, and paint-ready finish
  • Obscure glass for bathrooms and tempered glass where code requires it
  • Egress-compliant sizing on bedroom and basement openings
  • Screens, hardware color, and lock upgrades
  • Haul-away and lead-safe containment on pre-1978 homes

Frequently asked questions

How many quotes should I get?+

Three is the standard answer. Two is fine if both companies scope identically per opening and you have a strong reference for one of them.

Is the cheapest quote ever the right one?+

Sometimes, when it's genuinely the same scope from a company with lower overhead. More often the gap is insert vs. full-frame, a downgraded glass package, or exterior capping left out.
